Moscow, 1873 Inscribed in antique Russian writing ‘If there is no bread there is no meal’. Fully marked, maker’s initials in Cyrilic. 7 cm high *Salt chairs, or salt thrones, are an integral part of the historical Russian welcoming ceremony. When entering as a guest, you were invited to partake of a piece of bread and salt. The item reflected social status and wealth the more prominent the home the larger and more ornate to throne salt. The chair had a container under a lid where the salt was kept. Salt thrones were not an uncommon gift for weddings, house warmings or similar occasions. This traditional gift, symbolized friendship, intimacy and socially defined both the giver and the receiver. The gift was, compared to its size, expensive and was intended to be kept as a decorative item as well as for use.
